By now you should have received the 2007/08 Annual Report from the Lafayette Arts & Science Foundation (LASF), describing the many outstanding programs and opportunities it provides for the children of Lafayette's public schools and requesting a financial donation to LASF for the 2008/09 school year. I am writing to encourage you to support LASF as generously as you can.
During this current budget crisis, LASF, the Lafayette School PTA, and the other parent clubs in the District are working to fill the budget shortfall predicted by the state. LASF has committed a total of $976,000 to the Lafayette School District and $300,000 to the Acalanes Union High School District for the upcoming year. These funds will cover primarily district-delivered but also LASF-delivered programs in many different areas, including Science, Art, Instrumental Music, General/Choral Music and Social Studies, to name just a few.
Two program areas demonstrate in particular the value of our partnership with LASF: Choral and instrumental music. In partnership with the Lafayette School District, LASF funds one-half of the salary for our wonderful choral music instructor, Susan Comber. Susan is a fully credentialed music teacher with a highly articulated music curriculum. By the end of fifth grade, based on National Standards, Lafayette students have learned to keep a steady beat, sing on pitch, read simple musical notation, sing rounds and two-part songs, and appreciate music from other countries, cultures and time periods.
Mrs. Liz Brummel and Ms. Janet Johnson are our district instrumental music instructors, also fully credentialed. They teach many of our students how to play strings, wind instruments, brass instruments, and percussion. And then, they all learn how to play in synchronization with each other! They couldn't possibly help students produce the music they do without the support of supplemental instructors through LASF.
We all benefit from the excellence of Lafayette's schools, and LASF is a strong contributing factor. Please read your LASF Annual Report and consider a donation. You can mail in your donation, pay on-line at www.lasf.org, or bring it to the LASF Donation Day on April 22nd at drop off and pick up 8-8:30, 2:15-2:45. In late April and early May, LASF volunteers will begin contacting families to request donations for the 2008/09 school year. Send in your donation or pledge early to eliminate the need for that contact.
Please support the good work of LASF at Lafayette School. This contribution, as well as your contributions to the PTA, the Annual Fund drive in the fall and the other fundraisers throughout the year, will help maintain the high level of education available to studentsat our school.
